Embossed Ampersand from Munch Studio Blog

Typography 101 | A Brief History of the Ampersand

The ampersand—what a fascinating symbol! The ampersand is an ancient logogram originated as a ligature of the letters ‘et’ (Latin for ‘and’). Early examples date back to 79AD and were found as graffiti on a wall in Pompeii.

Typographer Jan Tschichold collected hundreds of examples of the symbol throughout history in the booklet The ampersand: Its origin and development
